BOURNEMOUTH, THE BUSH ...AND BEYOND!

$40.00

José Petrick, OAM (nee Tizard), born in Bournemouth, England, trained as a secretary then a nurse. She came to Australia on a working holiday in 1950. Later she became a governess on MacDonald Downs Station, 300 km north-east of Alice Springs. José married Martyn Petrick from nearby Mt Swan Station in 1952.

In 1960 José and Martyn, with their two small children, Suzette and Grant, moved to Neutral Junction Station, Barrow Creek, where José ran the health centre for 100 Aboriginal people and twenty European people.

Following Martyn's death in 1974, José moved to Alice Springs and became a journalist with the Centralian Advocate. José wrote about the town's street names in weekly features that the paper later published in a book. She self-published four updated editions of the book, all sell-outs. In 207 José wrote Kuprilya Springs: Hermannsburg and Other Things, the story of a water pipe installation that saved the Aboriginal Mission in drought.

In 2000 José was awarded the OAM and carried the Olympic torch. She is a Life Member of the Alice Springs Running and Walking Club, the McDouall Stuart Branch of the National Trust (NT) and Heritage Alice Springs.
